The Aurelia Garza collection is made with the finest untreated Italian leather and all of the hardware is carefully dipped in 10k gold. Yes, Gold! All materials are imported and manufactured in New York City, which is fantastic. The collection oozes class!

You guys already know that I love to interview the hottest new designers in the industry. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Aurelia Garza!

So without further ado, here is
Heavy on fashion talks to Aurelia Garza

Tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from?

That is kind of a hard question for me. I spent my childhood in the Northeast of Mexico and my teenage years in South Texas. I feel Mexican and Texan at the same time. We live in such a globalized world that the place you are born, growth up, and live are not necessarily related to your ethnicity.

Tell us about your interior design career. How was the transition from interior designer to fashion designer? Similarities did you find between the two industries? How do they differ?

Interior design and fashion are both about communicating ideas non verbally.  As an interior designer or fashion designer I have to create a concept to communicate an idea visually so that my designs are strong and meaningful. Both industries are very visual; it’s all about creating an interesting design by playing with colors, shapes, scale, symmetry, materials and so on. The main difference between interior design and fashion design is obvious: one industry focus on designing spaces and the other one on clothes and accessories, but the design process is the same.

I see that gold has a huge influence on the Aurelia Garza collection. Would you consider gold as your signature color, if so why?

Yes, gold is the signature color of the brand. ‘Aurelia’ means gold in Latin and I wanted to link all the bags back to the brand, not just by adding a logo or a label but with a choice of color.

I love the reversible tote bag from the Aurelia Garza collection, how did this concept come to be?

I got the idea by going through my own personal bag collection! I’m always over packing and switching bags by my mood and look. It seemed odd to me that most handbags lack versatility beyond their design so I wanted to create a bag that you could transform into another bag. A bag that you can take anywhere and if it doesn't go with your next outfit, you could easily change its appearance.

Describe the Aurelia Garza woman? What Fashion icon do you feel best encompasses the brand?

The Aurelia Garza woman is always on the go and she is always ready and prepared for her next challenge. She is good at adapting to her environment while remaining looking polished and glamorous. That's why I feel the reversible tote bag captures the essence of the brand.

I have always admired Emma Watson. She is smart, classy, educated, sophisticated, joyful, and she wants make a difference in the world. Young women like her are who I imagine wearing my bags.

What do you hope to have achieved in the industry, 10 years from now?

I hope to establish my brand as one of the top brands for luxury leather goods made in the U.S. I’m working with the finest materials to ensure that luxury and practicality remains important to the brand.

Will you be expanding the Aurelia Garza collection?

Definitely, I am currently working on new designs and styles for the nest few upcoming seasons. Right now we have four amazing styles with a vast color array to choose from. In the near future I will definitely be introducing more designs for the collection.

What advice would you give a budding designer in the industry?

Creativity and passion will keep you moving every day! You need to be able to motivate yourself against any and all obstacles. Nothing is easy, but the journey is the best part. The hardest parts are what will help you decide on whether you made the right decision or not.

What would you consider the best lesson you have learned from being in the fashion industry?

Every day I am learning something new! I think the most important thing to do in any industry is to learn as much as you can about the industry you are in, network with people in your industry, give your best, and to not give up. It’s okay to not know everything in the beginning because you’re still learning. It’s your mistakes that will help pave the way.

Where can all my fashion divas and gurus check out Aurelia Garza collection?

They can check out the collection at www.aureliagarza.com

Finally, what does fashion mean to you

To me, Fashion is about expressing yourself. It’s a form of shaping yourself and having a limitless amount of fun along the way.

Hello, all my fashion divas and gurus! I am excited to bring you my thoughts on 9thelm.com. Thanks to the darlings at 9th and elm,  I had the chance to shop and experience all that 9th and elm had to offer. You are probably asking, what are 9th and elm? Well, 9thandelm is a flash sale site with handmade jewelry, clothing,  accessories, and otherwise awesome stuff from some crazy good independent designers. Think of it as an awesome retail store that is constantly having a great sale going every single day. The best thing about 9th and elm is that you do not have to leave the comforts of home.

Well, without further ado, Here is Heavy on Fashion reviews - 9th and elm!

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by all the fabulous and affordable fashion accessories on 9thandelm.com. I was able to obtain a lovely Black tote with gold hardware by Lemonberry Lane , a red druzy bib statement necklace, and a navy and white sailor inspired bracelet for just $70. Yes, just $70! The price for many of the items on 9th and elm are very affordable. The shipping at 9thelm.com is extremely fast and all the items were packed nicely.  All these pieces are very well made.

The black tote is very durable. I love the gold turn lock hardware and handles are super comfy. The handles are dark brown which adds a nice constant to the black bag and gold hardware. The best feature on this tote are the pockets, 5 in all, which is a must for my constant traveling. Great job Lemonberry Lane! This Black tote by Lemonmerry lane was $54!

The red druzy bib statement necklace is adorable and great for a night out or a casual day in the park. You can't go wrong with this statement necklace. I love wearing this necklace with a crisp white fitted t-shirt, dark denim jeans, and a cute pair of flats. I also love the length.  Not too long, not too short, just right! This necklace lays flat against the chest and lightweight. The red druzy bib statement necklace retail was $9.00!

My final purchase was the navy and white sailor inspired bracelet. This bracelet is a great look for the summer due to its nautical inspiration. The fit is great on my small wrist. The nautical charms lay very flat  against the skin. I love the brass color charms, which compliments all types of jewelry.  The navy and white sailor inspired bracelet was $7.00 during a flash sale!

I will also be doing mini reviews of all the items seen on my Instagram @heavyonfashion, So stay tuned!

Heavy on Fashion talks to Nataly Aponte

Hello all my fashion diva and gurus! You love jewlery...I love jewlery. I am happy to bring to you a fantastic Brooklyn based jewelry designers and craftswomen, Nataly Aponte. Nataly is launching her next collection: The Matchstick Collection. The Matchstick Collection is her largest, and also most varied with uses of fine metals such as yellow gold, sterling silver, and citrine, as well as gems such as garnet, rubilitie, topaz, and more. Here is a look at Nataly's latest collection and How Ms. Aponte started as a jewelry designer

Here is Heavy on Fashion talks to Nataly Aponte!

Heavy on Fashion:  Where are you from?

Nataly Aponte: I'm from NY. Born in the Bronx and my family moved to Larchmont when I was 5 years old.

Heavy On Fashion: Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of jewelry.

Nataly Aponte: I'm usually inspired by a gemstone, color, pattern, or material. Sometimes furniture or a well styled interior. Simple shapes and nature can get my wheels turning. I also have a passion for ribbon and knotting. Most of my larger pieces start there.

Heavy On Fashion: How would you define your city's jewelry?

Nataly Aponte: NY is edgy and modern. There is constant reinvention. Materials are always being pushed to the limit. Each designer can have their own take on materials. You can walk around all day and see variations of one common denominator. I love seeing an interesting piece of jewelry on someone and wonder, who made that?

Heavy On Fashion: When did you realize you wanted to become a jewelry designer?

Nataly Aponte: At a very young age. I began making those colored woven plastic string bracelets they teach you in camp and never stopped making and creating since then. My aunt gave me a box of leather swatches she had from a shoe designer she worked for. I loved the leather, texture, and colors so much I decided to make earrings out of them. I folded, cut, glued, and jeweled them up in my grandmothers house and gifted them for Christmas. This box traveled with me for years up until art school. It became my palette until all the scraps were gone. My aunt still has her earrings!

Heavy On Fashion: What are some of your proudest accomplishments as a designer?

Nataly Aponte: When I run into someone who's wearing one of my pieces and I cannot stop starring at how great it looks on them. Part of me adorns them. That's a huge feeling.

Heavy On Fashion: How would you define your personal style?

Nataly Aponte: Eccentric, eclectic, vintage meets modern. I'm pretty glamorous!

Heavy On Fashion: What's your favorite part about conceptualizing a design?

Nataly Aponte: When I have one idea for a piece and I can instantly see other variations unfold. Its all there, I just have to quickly get moving with a raging fire!

Heavy On Fashion: What do you hope to have achieved in the industry, 10 years from now?

Nataly Aponte: Nataly Aponte=matchsticks! The girl who creates fire and then some...

Heavy On Fashion: What does fashion mean to you?

Nataly Aponte: Your own style, periods that inspire you, colors and materials that resonate with you, things you feel good in. Not what's trending, that's kinda like following a seasonal look book. Unless you're into the trend but always try and put your own stamp on it. Mix it your way! In a city where black is a staple, you can be in head to toe black but its the accessories that truly define you.
